In February 2015, on a cold winter’s day, April LaPoint first opened the doors of her childhood dream, a hair salon, the In-Style Hair Studio in Kenosha, WI.
“Making people feel beautiful about themselves was one of my motivational drivers,” says LaPoint. Her passion for hair design came from an early interest in the beauty industry. From age seven, she knew that she wanted to become a stylist. At the age of twelve she began building skills and proficiencies such as customer service and engineering.
These jobs helped her build the necessary talents she would need to thrive as an entrepreneur.
April recognizes the importance of family being placed before anyone else and those beliefs were put to the test when her Grandfather passed away and her place of employment at that time informed her that they may not have her position saved for her when she returned.
After leaving the first Salon she apprenticed for, she knew instantly that she wanted to be an owner. She had a thirst for success and used that ambition to become a manager, then become a Hair and Spa Coach, and finally she propelled herself into becoming a successful business owner and leader in the beauty industry.
In order to overcome the challenges of starting a small business, which included financial planning and business plan writing, LaPoint sought out the assistance of Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation (WWBIC) and also Jim McPhaul, director of the Wisconsin Small Business Development Center at UW-Parkside (SBDC). Through the SBDC, she was able to put together her perfect business plan, financials, and overcame obstacles, making her dream a reality.
With everything set and in order, LaPoint was finally able to open up her very own Hair Salon in 2015. Today, she is a prosperous business owner with a mission that caters to the community by enhancing beauty and style to fit any lifestyle. Helping the world, one guest at a time, with an extraordinary personal experience through guest consultation, education, and guidance.
When asked what advice she would give to entrepreneurs she advised, “Do your homework, research, and development. Find the right people to work with you on your vision and marketing.
Go to the Small Business Development Center, they can help and so can Wisconsin’s Women’s Business Initiative Corporation. And always continue educating yourself.”
